There are a variety of reasons a student might need to see a social worker. In general, it is a good idea to refer students for social work services if their social emotional concerns are impacting their school life. Below is a list of some of the signs that might prompt you to refer a student:

  • Unexplained drop in class performance

  • Recent lack of motivation

  • Unexplained decline in quality of work

  • Habitual tardiness

  • Excessive absenteeism

  • Frequent request to go to the nurse

  • Sudden changes in physical appearance (weight loss/gain, hygiene changes)

  • Suspicion of substance abuse (glassy/bloodshot eyes, slurred speech, ect.)

  • Unusual physical injuries

  • Negative peer group changes

  • Defiance of rules

  • Student outbursts (verbally abusive to adults and/or peers)

  • Homelessness
