About School Social Work

What is School Social Work?

School social workers are mental health professionals who provide specialized interventions to students. They help bridge the gap between a student’s home and school life as well as support staff in social emotional difficulties that affect their ability to engage with students. 

Social Worker Supports:

  • Help families understand school policies and how to access school services

  • Evaluate students for special education services 

  • Refer students to outside community resources

  • Assist in the development of students’ interpersonal skills 

  • Provide individual and group counseling to students

  • Assess students for emotional functioning, substance abuse, and suicidal concerns 

  • Manage student crisis and help students cope with stressful situations 

  • Support parents in understanding their child’s social and emotional concerns

  • Collaborate with teachers to create social emotional curriculum

  • Work with support staff members and administration to provide extra student support when needed 

  • Support teachers in times of crisis
