First graders at Rhodes apply new skills through many different ways while working and learning in whole group, small group and independent settings. Students become part of their classroom community gaining confidence and responsibility as their school year progresses.

Students are exposed to reading and writing through a combination of the ReadyGEN curriculum, Heggerty Phonemic awareness, Fundations phonics and small group guided reading. First grade math follows the Go Math curriculum as well as time for small math stations to reinforce concepts. Social Studies and Science lessons are directly related to reading themes and include animals, economics, space and responsible citizenship.

First grade students have gym four days a week and art, music, computers, Spanish and library once a week. These classes are taught by specialists in their field.

Rhodes offers a dual language bilingual program for English language learners to promote biliteracy and competency in both English and Spanish. Students enrolled in this program use the Estrellita literacy program as well as ReadyGEN's Biliteracy Pathway curriculum. The Go Math whole group curriculum is in Spanish and small group stations focus on building a bridge between Spanish and English vocabulary while reinforcing targeted skills and concepts.
