Fifth Grade
Fifth grade is an important transition year for students. As they leave elementary school behind, they assume more responsibilities associated with middle school. Gym uniforms and combination locks are firsts. Fifth graders are strongly encouraged to use their assignment notebooks regularly because in 6th grade they will be moving from classroom to classroom and need to record assignments before changing classes. In recognition of the important growth and changes occurring at this time in their lives, the students attend two special programs from Candor Health covering the topic of puberty.
Students are provided instruction in all academic subjects. Please see the curriculum maps on the Rhodes website for more detailed information. Besides their core academic subjects, art, computers, keyboarding, STEM, Spanish, and music are taught. In addition, 5th graders practice effective test-taking strategies that help them prepare for MAP testing three times a year as well as the state IAR tests taken each spring.
All students are provided the opportunity for extra support through a variety of programs offered. This includes Rhodes Academy and Title I Math and Reading. In addition, the school has special education teachers, ELL services, social workers, and speech therapists on staff. Enrichment classes in reading and math are available for those students who qualify.
Along with numerous clubs that are available after school, 5th grade students have the opportunity to join the band and 5th Notes Chorus.
Every classroom has internet access and one-to-one technology that allow the students to enhance their educational experience. We also use a parent/teacher communication tool called Teacherease. This allows parents to access their child's current grades from a home or work computer. In addition, the Class Dojo app is utilized to stay connected.
Teachers can be contacted via DOJO and email. Please visit our Staff Connection to contact your child's teacher.
